It’s Memorial Day Weekend – and while everyone else is celebrating the “unofficial beginning of summer,” the sweltering season is in full swing here in south Florida (and has been since that last cold snap ended in March, sigh). So if you’re looking for something to do, why not celebrate with one of these summertime activities?
1. Carlin Park cookout. Sure, backyard grilling is a year-round activity here. But how about switching up the scenery and spending a day at the park with your friends, family and plenty of food? Bonus: it’s right on the beach, so you can easily turn your picnic into a beach day! Win! In case you’re not familiar with everyone’s favorite beach spot, Carlin Park is located at 400 S A1A.
2. SUP!? If the answer is, “nothing much,” then clearly you have yet to experience the wonders of standup paddle boarding – and this weekend is the perfect time to try it! The reason this hot new sport is so popular is because it actually requires minimal skill, but looks pretty impressive! So pack a cooler, grab your kids and your dog and head to one of the area’s many standup paddle boarding rental locations.
3. Dog days. Tired of leaving Fido behind? It’s time to pack up your cooler, your kids, *and* the dog and head for the water! The county’s only dog-friendly beach is located at 2188 Marcinski Road (the unguarded section between crossovers #25 and #59) — it’s a great stretch of sand with happy dogs and friendly owners looking for a good time. Be sure to obey all posted signs, keep Fido on a leash or supervised at all times and clean up any messes he may leave behind.
Whatever you do this weekend, don’t forget to lather on the SPF and stay hydrated – summer is here and it looks like it’s going to be a hot one!
